SERGIO RODAS - Tropical Symphony
23.4.-20.5.2010
Taidesalonki Piirto, Uudenmaankatu 7, 00120 Helsinki

The exhibition ”Tropical Symphony” was created by me to reflect on nature and the threat of destruction that it is currently facing. It is a process of catharsis to transmit emotions through colour and form. The marine fauna, in this case turtles and fish, become the heroes and the expressive starting point of my works
.
The tropical colours of my paintings endeavour to show art as a symbol and medium of identity and as a diffusion of Nicaraguan and universal cultural roots. Nicaraguan, because the power of the colours and the contact with the nature are indivisible; and universal, because conservation of the environment concerns humanity as a whole. In other words, it is a exhibition of environmental dimensions, using art as the integrating element, reflective, global and of universal interest.

Blazing yellow and orange colours blend with soothing blues to give a poetic touch of colours, with its variations in tone, texture and emotions, as in the Nicaraguan tropic. In the paintings you can see nostalgic images of the endangered marine world: fish in motion, and at the same time still, timeless. And turtles as iconography of the ancient rites of reproduction and survival. A world in danger, where the main actor is man: pollution of the seas, increase in tourism in coastal areas where turtles reproduce, the consumption of their eggs and meat, and the use of their shell to make jewellery, accessories, combs, etc. Also the use of trawls in fishing, where different marine species get trapped.

So, this is my highly sensitive interest, both artistic and personal, towards the nature and its conservation. A call for attention in the face of global contamination and especially the threat against the defenceless and fragile beauty of the marine fauna.
